The Power of Play-Based Learning

Leo's Children's Nursery
At Leo's Children's Nursery, play is not merely recreation. It is the very foundation of how young children learn, explore, and make sense of the world around them. Our play-based approach aligns with the Early Years Foundation Stage framework while ensuring every day is filled with joy, curiosity, and meaningful discovery.
Why Play Matters
Decades of research in early childhood education consistently demonstrate that play is the most effective way for young children to develop cognitive, physical, social, and emotional skills. Through play, children learn to problem-solve, communicate, negotiate, and express themselves. They develop creativity, resilience, and independence, all while doing what comes most naturally to them: having fun.
Our Play-Based Environment
Each of our nursery rooms is carefully designed to offer a rich variety of play opportunities. We provide open-ended resources that encourage imagination, such as blocks, fabrics, and natural materials, alongside more structured activities that develop specific skills. Our continuous provision approach means that resources are always available, allowing children to follow their own interests and revisit activities as needed.
Learning Through Different Types of Play
Imaginative play in our role-play areas helps children develop language skills, empathy, and an understanding of the world. Whether they are pretending to be a doctor, a shopkeeper, or a parent, children are processing their experiences and building social understanding.
Construction play with blocks, Lego, and natural materials develops spatial awareness, mathematical thinking, and fine motor skills. Children learn about balance, symmetry, and cause and effect as they build towers and create structures.
Creative play through art, music, and dance allows children to express their emotions, develop self-confidence, and refine their sensory processing. Our dedicated creative areas are always stocked with high-quality materials that invite exploration.
Physical play in our outdoor spaces and indoor soft-play areas builds strength, coordination, and confidence. Children learn to assess risk, push their boundaries, and celebrate their achievements.
Adult Support in Play
Our skilled practitioners do not simply supervise play. They actively participate, extend learning, and document children's progress through careful observation. We use these observations to plan next steps that are uniquely tailored to each child's interests and developmental stage.
Bringing Play Home
We encourage parents to embrace play-based learning at home. Simple activities like cooking together, building with cardboard boxes, or creating a den with blankets can be incredibly enriching. The key is to follow your child's lead, provide open-ended resources, and resist the urge to direct their play too heavily.
At Leo's, we are proud to offer a play-based curriculum that respects childhood as a unique and valuable stage of life. We invite you to visit and see our play-based approach in action at one of our nursery settings.
