Helping Children Settle Into Nursery
Emma Richardson
Leo's Children's Nursery
Starting nursery is one of the most significant milestones in a young child's life, and it can feel equally momentous for parents. At Leo's Children's Nursery, we understand that the settling-in process is about building trust, creating familiarity, and ensuring every child feels truly at home in our care.
Our Gentle Approach
We believe that a successful transition to nursery life begins long before your child's first day. That's why we offer a comprehensive settling-in programme that spans several weeks, allowing your child to gradually build confidence and familiarity with their new environment.
During your initial visits, your child will be supported by both you and their Key Person. This dual support system helps your child understand that nursery is a safe extension of their home life, where caring adults are always nearby.
The Key Person Bond
Each child at Leo's is assigned a dedicated Key Person who takes primary responsibility for their care, development, and emotional wellbeing. Your Key Person will be your main point of contact, providing regular updates and working closely with you to understand your child's unique needs, routines, and preferences.
Research consistently shows that children who form strong attachments with a consistent caregiver settle into nursery more quickly and develop greater confidence in social settings. This is why we invest so heavily in the Key Person relationship from the very beginning.
What You Can Do at Home
Preparing your child for nursery at home can make the transition smoother:
- Talk positively about nursery in the weeks leading up to their start date
- Read books about starting nursery or school together
- Visit the nursery beforehand so the environment feels familiar
- Establish a consistent goodbye routine that is brief but loving
- Pack a familiar comfort item from home in their bag
Trust the Process
It is completely normal for children to feel uncertain or emotional during their first few days or weeks at nursery. Our experienced team has supported hundreds of children through this transition, and we are here to reassure you that every child eventually finds their place in our nursery family.
Remember, a few tears at drop-off often turn into smiles within minutes once children become engaged in our activities. We always keep parents informed and will call you if we feel your child needs extra reassurance during the settling-in period.
